The Historic D&SNGRR Train Ride
All of our San Juan Skyway Packages include the experience on this famous train
In addition to incredible beauty, the San Juan Skyway area offers an unforgettable railroad journey back in time on the famous D&SNGRR. (Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Rail-Road). The leisurely 3-½ hour trip each way from Durango to Silverton passes through terrain too remote and wild to be traversed by roads. But silver which was mined throughout the region needed to be transported from awesome mountain terrain and valleys surrounding remote Silverton. Starting in the early 1880s, a seemingly impossible-to-build railroad hauled incredibly rich silver discoveries to processing and markets. Over decades of silver mining, the investment paid off enormously in precious metals and in later years has paid off for revealing incredible alpine views and panoramic beauty of the San Juan mountains to visitors.
Departing from the Durango or Silverton Depot, this unforgettable trip into the Rocky Mountains and the San Juan National Forest travels alongside the Animas River with its beautiful foliage, surrounded by a dozen mountain peaks exceeding 13,000′ and 14,000′. The 1923-25 vintage locomotives used to pull today’s D&SNGRR trains remain steam-operated. Heated during winter months for passenger comfort, open gondola cars provide panoramic views of the mountains.
American Heritage Railways, Inc., owner-operator of the D&SNGRR, also owns the refurbished historic Grand Imperial Hotel, Restaurant & Saloon in Silverton. Reopened in 2016 after meticulous restoration, the famed 140-year-old property is overseen by James Harper, son of American Heritage Railways co-founder and CEO Allen C. Harper. American Heritage Railways Hotels owns and manages historic trains throughout the U.S. Together the D&SNGRR and the Grand Imperial Hotel offer visitors a chance without comparison to step back into the Old West. Both train and hotel provide authentic and enjoyable experiences of a bygone era that visitors will long remember.
